SYLLABUS
TEXTBOOK:
Thomas' Calculus (12E) Weir, Hass, Giordano, ISBN: 0-321-72641-3, Addison Wesley.
GRADE POLICY:
Your course grade will be based on two midterms
(100 points each), a final exam (200 points), and a discussion grade based on
homework and quizzes (100 points). Your total score (out of 500 points) will be curved.
The extra credit assignment (marked with *) is worth up to 50 points and will be used to enlarge the curve for this class (most grades, but not all, will be bumped up by this procedure).
EXAMS:
The midterms will be in class, and there will be no make-up exams.
The first midterm will be on October 13. The second midterm will be on November 15.
The final exam is on December 20, at 7:45 AM, in Humanities 3650.
A practice exam 1 can be found here,
with an answer key. The answer key for Midterm 1 is now available here.
A practice exam 2 can be found here, with an answer key. The answer key for Midterm 2 is now available here.
A practice final exam can be found here. The final exam is available here. Some old exams are available here.
CALCULATORS:
No graphing calculators are required for this course.
You will need a scientific calculator for some of the homework. Calculators, cell phones and notes will not be allowed in the exams. Answers on all exams will be required in the exact form, e.g., pi rather than 3.14.
GETTING HELP:
If you need help with the course, first talk to your TA, then to the instructor.
If you cannot come to the scheduled office hours, make an appointment to see either your TA or the instructor at a different time.
You can also get help in the MathLab, located in B227 Van Vleck Hall (across from the Mathematics Library).
Other sources for help include the the Math Tutorial Program and GUTS.
HOMEWORK and QUIZZES:
Homework will be assigned each Monday,
and will be posted on this page. You will have to submit it 9 days later, on Wednesday, at the beginning of the discussion session. Late homeworks will not be accepted.
Quizzes will be given in the discussion session on each Wednesday.
Each quiz will consist on short questions on the material of the last homework.
Problems marked with * are optional and don't have to be handed in; however,
it is recommended that you work them out, as a good practice for midterms and final exam.
In order to receive extra credit for this course (up to 50 points),
you need to write the solutions to these optional problems and hand them in during
the last week of classes (your teacher will collect them).
