Q. Do we need have any proofs (new or old ) memorized
for the final exam?

A. Nope.

Q. Will we have to write a proof for anything on the final exam?

A. It depends on what you call a proof.
I regard practice exam problems 1 and 2 as proofs.

----------- Nov 20 -----------

Q. I am just wondering if this version of the proof will be acceptable
on your test?

A. My browser does not load this youtube video, but I am told that
this proof uses Part 1 of the fundamental theorem and that it's the same
proof that is given on wikipedia of what they call the Corollary to
Part 1. So the answer is NO unless you also prove Part 1.
See also fund.pdf for the proof of Part 1.
If you choose to do it this way, you may assume Lemma 1 and 2
without proof.

----------- Nov 15 -----------

Q. I just checked the website and find out that the Extra.pdf is
still the old one about exam 1 1-13. I could no find 14-38 on
the website. Could you upload it again please?

A. You may need to empty your browser cache. Here is the latest
verson: extra-nov15.pdf
If it is a cache problem, changing the name will fix it.

----------- Nov 4 -----------

Q. For the 2nd midterm exam I was wondering if the material that
we have to prepare is cumulative ie does it include everything
from September or only what we have learnt after the first
midterm exam.

A. The second exam will only cover materical learned after the
first exam. The final exam will be cumulative.

----------- Oct 30 -----------

Q. Are "Fermat Theorem of Stationary Points" and "Brouwer
Fixed-Point Theorem" going to be included on the exam?

A. Yes.

Q. Like many, I'm leaving on Wednesday November 27 for
Thanksgiving. I know some classes are more or less having a
review day that would be fine to skip. I was wondering if you
were planning to teach a new lesson on this day that would be
good to be at or if it is going to be a review day that would
not be essential to attend. I'm planning on when to leave and
would love to know if I should be in class.

A. It will be a review day. I will be answering question but
will not present new material.

----------- Oct 15 -----------
This is a nowhere differentiable continuous function.
The first example of such a function was given by
Weierstrass in the 1870's.

----------- Oct 09 -----------

Q. Is it possible that if you did have solutions manuals for the
assigned homework since the beginning of the semester and to the
practice exams to put them up on your website to help study for the
upcoming exam?

A. Everything I have is on the web. You could try working
with a group of other students and compare your answers.

----------- Oct 07 -----------

Q. Can I use l'Hopital's rule?

A. You may use it. You don't need to. I don't know if
you want to. See Sigurd Angenent's:
When not to use l'Hopital's rule.
A few examples of limits
where l'Hopital provides the kind of help we all can do without.

Q. Could you please tell me how many chapters will be covered in
first exam?

A. Chapters 1 thru 4.

----------- Sept 27 -----------

Q. I just looked at the exam schedule and is the 2nd exam really on
21th of Nov(Thursday)? The Thanksgiving day? I just wanted to plan
ahead.

A. I doubt it. On the other hand the first exam, Oct 10, is on Thanksgiving day
--- if you live in Canada in 2025.

----------- Sept 10 -----------

Q. I was wondering how to quizzes on Moodle were being
graded. Do we only have one attempt or do we have unlimited attempts?
Are they graded on completion or on accuracy of the answers?

A. Moodle quizes (if I have checked the right buttons!) have
unlimited attempts and are graded on the best score. There is a time
limit of one-week. I don't know what "graded on completion" means.

Q. Will the online homework and paper decide the credits of semester? If
so, what's the percent of correction of homework should I get if I want
to get the full credits?

A. You need to discuss the "Discussion grade" with your TA. It is their
responsibility and under their control.
