Mock 112
This document describes a tentative redesign for
Math 112, the UW Madison course in college algebra.
The redesign consists of
- The textbook: College Algebra (Fifth edition) by David Cohen
with Ross Rueger, 2003. Thomson Brooks Cole.
LaTeX documents reference the text with the macro
\bookref as in "See \bookref{page 173}"
- The course notes.
The source
uses the hyperref
package so that the pdf output can contain live links both to other
Mock 112 dosuments and to the World Wide Web.
- The noteshells.
These will be either
- part of work book which students can buy,
- a series of .pdf files (of about six pages each)
which students can print out,
- a series of html files with text areas which students can fill out and save,
- or all three.
Methods 1 and 2 world be created in LaTeX with a macro
which allows two versions to be printed: a student version
and an instructor version. The student version will
have the text areas left blank which the students can
fill out in class as the instructor lectures.
The instructor versions will have these blank areas filled in.
If students use the method 3, the instructor will be
able to exmine and criticize what they write. Method 3 would
ideally be a Mooole activity.
- The WeBWorK problem sets.
The other documents in the course will be able to
link directly to a particular problem. If WeBWorK proves too unwieldy
to program the "branching style" problems we have in mind, we will
rewrite it as a Moodle module.
It is important that we design a strategy to
ensure that as documents in the project change, the links
do not break. Perhaps there should be (or is) a computer program
which does this.
