The final exam will be 7:45-9:55 in room 145 of Birge Hall. Make sure in advance that you know how to find the room, so that you don't come late to the exam because you were trying to find it!

April 22: I slowed down a lot in a couple of sections, compared to the original schedule. I thought it was more important to understand the material than to rush through it. But we do need to reach certain key topics. There was some space in the schedule at the end, intentionally, and we will have to skip a couple of sections.

HERE is a revised schedule for the rest of the semester.

CLICK HERE to see the handout on Row Reduction and solving a system of equations that was prepared to be handed out the day classes were cancelled for snow! This handout is in Adobe's PDF format: Your web browser almost surely has already a plug-in for viewing PDF. If you cannot open the file: The standard PDF reader for many years has been Adobe Reader. You can download that, for PC or Mac and maybe for Linux, directly from Adobe by clicking here. But many people have found recent versions of that program to be both "buggy" and outrageously bloated and slow. Another program you can download for free is Foxit, available by clicking here.
(The program I use to write PDF files sometimes leaves strange lines in the output: I see at least one, on the last page, just above the phrase "that we got above". Since there are some words or phrases intentionally underlined, those lines could be confusing! Sorry...)

SCHEDULE for the class: Lists sections I expect we will cover day-by-day, and exercises you should be sure you can work. The exercises are for your own calibration as to how well you understand the material: You may be asked to write up and turn in for grading some problems, which may include some of these. But you should at least make sure you can do these, as a test of how well you understand the material we are studying. Many exam problems will resemble these. The "midterm" exams and the material they will cover are shown on this schedule. NOTE that the midterm exams are on Thursday evenings: This is to allow you more time as well as letting us find a room where you won't be all crowded together. Be sure to note the midterm exam dates and times and be careful not to schedule other activities at those times!
The final exam will cover the whole course: Among other things, this gives you an opportunity to show later that you have gained mastery of some material that maybe you did not do well on at a midterm exam. The second midterm is nearly at the end of the semester so that relatively little new material, not previously on a test, needs to be on the final.

As of 12/28/2010: I have put the problems into the schedule for the first several weeks. I will continue to update this in coming days.

Course DESCRIPTION: This tells how the class will run, including some comments on what the course is supposed to accomplish and how grades will be computed.
