General Information

• Instructor: Sebastien Roch (Office hours: See Piazza (see below)). To communicate with the instructor or the TAs, use Piazza.
• Time and place: Lectures MWF 10-10:50 in FRANZ 1178.
• Required text:
  • [S] Multivariable Calculus (7th Ed.) by Stewart
• Exams:
  • Midterms: There will be two midterms, both at the usual location FRANZ 1178 during lecture time. The first midterm will be Monday, April 23, 2012. The second midterm will be Monday, May 21, 2012. No calculators or texts will be allowed in the midterms. There are no makeup exams (but see grading policy below). Bring student ID.
  • Final exam: The final exam is on Monday, June 11, 2012 3:00pm - 6:00pm. (Location to be announced.) No calculators or texts will be allowed in the final. Bring student ID.
• Grading:
  • Grading policy: The following is required to complete the course: Participation in the final exam and participation in at least one midterm. The total grade is the maximum of the following two schemes: 1) 10% for homework, 25% for each midterm, and 40% for the final; 2) 10% for homework, 30% for the best midterm, and 60% for the final. If you miss one midterm, the second scheme will automatically apply. In both schemes, the lowest homework score will be dropped.
  • Grading issues: If you believe a problem on an assignment or midterm has been graded incorrectly, you should submit your request for a regrade in writing within one week (and before the final exam). The final decision regarding all regrades will be made by the instructor. Please verify in a timely manner that your scores are correctly recorded on MyUCLA.
• Piazza: We will use Piazza, a free discussion board. You should sign up here with your UCLA email by looking up the class. On Piazza, you can:
  • Ask course-related questions
  • Collaborate to form a high-quality Wikipedia-style response
  • Have a traditional thread-style discussion
  • Customize how Piazza notifies you of new posts (e.g., in real time, in daily digests, etc.)
  • Posts can be anonymous if you wish.
  You are strongly encouraged to post any questions about course content or policies here, and to help answer your fellow students questions. There are things to be kept in mind while using Piazza. Here are the rules:
  • Do not post solutions to the assignments.
  • Be civilized; refrain from posting offensive, inappropriate, or irrelevant content. Remember that the whole class, including the professor and the TAs, are potentital readers to the discussion board. Use your common sense to determine what constitutes as acceptable content.
  • Posts should be in English.
  If you have questions for me or the TAs of a more personal nature, use a private post. I will also post course announcements there, so it is important to check it regularly.
• Student Math Center: The Student Math Center (SMC), located in MS 3974, will re-open on Wednesday, April 4, 2012. The hours of operation are: Monday through Thursday, 10:00am - 3:00pm. The SMC offers free, individual and group tutoring for all lower division math courses. This service is available on a walk-in basis; no appointment is necessary. Students may ask any of the TAs in attendance for assistance with math problems.

Homework Assignments

All assignments are from Stewart. Late homework will not be accepted. Calculators and written materials: You may use whatever resources you wish to do the homework, including calculators, textbooks, friends, TAs, etc., although by the end of the course you should be able to do all the homework questions without any assistance. A sample of questions will be graded each week. All homework assignments will be posted on Piazza.
