Math 141, Sem. I, 1998-99 (R.A. Brualdi) Handout 9 (October 5, 1998) Topic: More reasoning Problems and Some accelleration problems 1. There are two cups on the table. One holds coffee and one holds milk. You take a teaspoon of milk from the milk cup and stir it into the coffee cup. Then you take a teaspoon of mixture in the coffee cup and put it into the milk cup. After the two tranfers, is there more milk in the coffee cup or more coffee in the milk cup? Why? 2. Two cars, 120 miles apart, begin driving towards each other on a long straight highway. One car travels at 20 mph and the other at 40 mph. At the same time a canary, starting on one car, flies back and forth between the two cars as they approach one another. If the canary flies at 150 mph and spends no time to turn around at each car, how far has it flown when the two cars collide? 3. A car passes the 20 mile marker on a road going at 30 mph and immediately starts to accelerate at 10 mph^2. When does the car pass the 100 mile marker? 4. A car passes the 20 mile marker on a road going 60 mph and immediately starts to deccellerate at 10 mph^2. When does the car come to a halt? How far along the road is it when it stops?
