Math 141, Sem. I, 1998-99 (R.A. Brualdi) Handout 11 (October 14, 1998) Topic: Problems involving acceleration HAND IN PROBLEM 3 ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16 1. Textbook Page 70 - 9, 10, 11 2. Textbook Page 76 - 5, 7 3. Minneapolis (Mpls) is 260 miles from Madison, and you are driving from Madison to Mpls. At 10:00 AM, you are 60 miles from Madison and your speedometer indicates that you are travelling at 25 mph. Immediately, you step on the accelerator, and begin to accelerate at a constant 10 mph^2. (a) What time is it when you are halfway (130 miles from Madison) to Mpls? (b) How fast are you travelling at that time? (c) At the 130 mile marker, you immediately change from accelerating at mph^2 to deccelerating at 8 mph^2 until the car comes to a halt. Do you reach Minneapolis? If so, at what time, and how fast are you travelling when you enter Mpls? If not, how far are you from Mpls when your car comes to a halt?
