COURSE DESCRIPTION

Matrix algebra, linear systems of equations, vector spaces, sub-spaces, linear dependence, rank of matrices, determinants, linear transformations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, diagonalization, inner products and orthogonal vectors, symmetric matrices.

POLICIES ON GRADES AND EXAMS:

Your course grade will be based on quizzes (30%), and two in-class midterms (35% each).
Your total scores will be curved. No letter grades will be assigned before the end of the semester.


The midterm exams are scheduled during regular class time on July 11 and August 7.


Use of phones, tablets, laptops or calculators will not be allowed during exams. You must bring a valid UW Photo ID to all exams.


If you are eligible for special consideration on exams, please let me know as soon as possible, so that I can ensure that your needs are accommodated.
Students holding McBurney visas will take their exams at the Testing Center, read here and here for more details.


Make-up midterm exams will be considered only if there is a conflict with another university-related event (in which case you need to contact me as soon as possible), or a last-minute medical/family emergency (you need to show proof of such emergency, e.g., doctor's notes).

On homework assignments, academic dishonesty involves using someone else's work without attribution (see the homework section for details). On quizzes and exams, academic dishonestly includes but is not limited to: looking at another students' work, making use of a disallowed reference during an exam, looking at a cellphone for any reason (even if it's just to check the time) during an exam, or not following the stated policies for take-home exams.

The math department treat all incidents of academic dishonesty very seriously. For instance, the consequences for cheating on an exam may range from automatically failing the course to suspension or expulsion.
