Final Exam
The final exam will be in the evening from 7:25 PM to 9:25 PM on May 18th in locations to be determined.

By registering in this class you agree to be present at the final exam on this date and time.

Midterm Exams

There will be two in-class midterm exams on the following dates:

Midterm 1: Tuesday, March 6
Midterm 2: Thursday, April 19

Quizzes
There will be an online multiple choice quiz through Learn@UW each week. It will be based on the material covered the previous week. You will be able to take the quiz at any time between 6pm on Tuesday and midnight on Wednesday, but once you begin there will be a time limit (usually an hour). The quiz will be graded automatically.

Grading
Your final grade is based on the Quizzes (15%), the two Midterm Exams (25% each), and the Final (35%).

Homework
Homework will be assigned throughout the week on this page. Due to the large number of students, we will not collect or grade homework.

IMPORTANT: DO THE HOMEWORK. Even though we will not be grading it, failure to do the homework will have a disastrous effect on your grade (and your understanding). You should work through the homework for each section as soon as that section is covered.

Note that sections are listed in the order in which they will be covered, which at times differs from the order of the book.

Communicating with me
The best way to communicate with me is to come to my office hours.

If you cannot make it to my office hours, try your TA's office hours. If you would rather talk to me, please let me know after the lecture and I will try to set an appointment.

Important: There are over 400 students in the two sections of this class. This makes it next to impossible for me to read and reply to frequent queries by email. So, please, do not contact me via email unless absolutely necessary.

I will not answer mathematical questions via email. Ask them in class or in my office hours.

Electronic devices
The use of electronic devices (such as calculators and smart phones) is not be permitted on the midterms, nor will you need them.

Please do not use your cell phones in class.

Other resources
The math department has a drop-in tutorial service, the Math lab. It runs afternoon/evening, Monday through Thursday. It will help with small questions in your homework, etc, but it will not tutor entensively. The Math Tutorial service does more extensive tutoring, but you need to commit several hours a week. If you do not attend, they will stop your tutoring. You need a referral from your TA to enter the Tutorial service. Finally, if you feel you are in real trouble in the class, you can ask your TA to refer you to the Early Alert System during the third week of classes. The system will have an adviser review your background and issue recommendations on what else you can do to improve your situation. All services are free of charge.
