The CS and Math departments are in the process of cross-listing CS/Math 713 "Numerical methods for differential equations" .

However In the fall 2000, CS 713 "meets with" Math 801. Math 801 is a "topics in applied math" course and the topics change every year. Math 713 was erroneously created as "Potential theory" and not cross-listed with CS 713. This will be fixed in the future.

Which course should you register for this fall?:

  1. if you are taking this course because you need credits for a "CS" course then stick with your CS 713 registration.
  2. If you are taking this course because you really need to know numerical methods for diff eqs then you are not going to get it this time and you may want to take CS/Math 713 next year, in which case you should drop CS 713 now and register for Math 801 as you would not get credit for CS 713 next year.
  3. If you are taking this course because you really care about the topics I plan to cover then you should be registered for Math 801 because if there are enough students in Math 801 than we might make it a regular course.
