XXXVIII. 2019 Crazylegs 8K (4.97 miles) Race, April 27, 2019

Weather was quite cool with a temperature about 40 degrees F and during the race a little rain and snow. My time was 50:47, a 10:13 pace, second in my age group of only 10 people and 2294 out of 2835 male runners. This year there were only about 10 waves, starting from the library mall on campus, up State Street, over to Langdon and then the usual route. I had hoped for a time of 50 minutes but missed it. Next year I move up on the age groups!

XXXVII. 2018 Run For Literacy 5K Race, October 13, 2018

This year it was a very cold fall morning in Madison, temperature about 35 degrees F and sunny. I wore ny long racing pants, a hat, and gloves. As usual I bicycled to where the race begins. Offically, my time was 30:09, a 09:43 minute a mile pace. I guess I have to be happy for an under 10 minute a mile pace now. I did not see any division into age groups but I was 44 out of 119 runners.

XXXVI. 2018 Crazylegs 8K (4.97 miles) Race, April 28, 2018

A very chilly morning, temperature at 40 F or beloe when I left my house for the transportation provided to the Capital square from Camp Randall. My time was 48:27 for a 9:45 pace, a lot slower than last year. I came in second in my age group this year having been beaten by someone who just moved into that age group. One more year then I move into the last age group!

XXXVII. 2017 Run For Literacy 5K Race, September 24, 2017

The race was earlier this year with a new course that started at the new Literacy Center in Madison. It was a very warm fall morning in Madison, temperature about 75 degrees F and sunny. As usual I bicycled to where the race begins. Offically, my time was 28:09, a 09:08 minute a mile pace. I guess my under-9 minute mile paces are over. I came in first in my age group (70-79) but I was the only one in that age group! BUT I was 18th out of about 70 5K runners, a smaller number this year, and got a medal to add to my collection.

XXXVI. 2017 Madison Mother's Day Run, May 14, 2017

A lovely Sunday morning at race time (8:30 AM) at Olin Park. There were about 437 runners. My age group was M65-99 of which I was well into!. Time was 28:09 with a 9:04 minutes per mile pace. (slower than last year which was 27:39 with an 8:54 per mile pace). Well, 10 seconds more in a year is not so bad. The second person in my age group was 65 and had a time of 28:48. I was 4th out of 88 male runners and 60th out of 437 runners. All finishers were given a rose and I got a medal.

XXXV. 2017 Crazylegs 8K (4.97 miles) Race, April 29, 2017

A rather chilly morning, temperature in the lower 40's F again. MY TIME WAS 45:30 SECONDS, slower than last year but a 9:10 pace and I won again my Division (MALES,75--79): 1/12.

XXXIV. 2016 Madison Turkey Trot 5K Race, November 24, 2016.

A cool Thanksgiving Day morning, about 32 degrees F. There were SO MANY people running. Again this year I took second place in my age group of 65+. My official time was 27:38, slower than last year, but still an 8:53 a mile pace.. There were so many people running that it was difficult getting started. In fact there were 2770 runners, and I was nnumber 541.

XXXIII. 2016 Run For Literacy 5K Race, October 23, 2016

It was a gorgeous fall morning in Madison, temperature about 50 degree F and sunny. As usual I bicycled to where the race begins on State Street. Offically, my time was 26:58, almost a minute faster than last year!. It was a 08:41 minute a mile pace. But I only came in second in my age group (70-79), still worth a "medal". I was 42nd of 128 runners and 30th of 51 male runners.

XXXII. 2016 Madison Mother's Day Run, May 8, 2016

A very cool morning at race time (8:30 AM) at Olin Park. There were 621 runners but only 108 males. My age group was M65-99. There were only two of us in this age group and I came in first: Time was 27:39 with an 8:54 per mile pace. I was 26 out of the 108 male runners and 50 out of all 621 runners. If I were in the 60-64 group I would have placed second (1 minute behind). All finishers were given a rose and I got a medal.

XXXI. 2016 Crazylegs 8K (4.97 miles) Race, April 30, 2016

A rather chilly morning, temperature in the lower 40's F. Shortly after I finished, crossing the 50 yard line in the football stadium, it started to rain. MY TIME WAS 44:17, 10 SECONDS LESS (!) THAN LAST YEAR, AN 8:55 PER MILE PACE. I won my Division (MALES,75--79): 1/9 .

XXX. First Madison Turkey Trot, 5k Race, November 26, 2015

9 A.M. on Thanksgiving morning, overcast, no rain, cool temperature, great running weather. There were 1527 people who finished. My times was 26:57 for an 8:41 per mile pace, better than I expected. As a result I took second place in my male age group of 65-99. I was 195 out of 551 male runners, and 307 out of 1527.

XXX. 2015 Run For Literacy 5k Race, October 11, 2015

It was a gorgeous morning, temperature about 60 degree F and sunny. As usual I bicycled to where the race begins on State Street. Offically, my time was 27:55, longer than last year but it was still a 9:00 minute per mile pace. I won my age group (70-79) but I was the only one in this age group! But I always consider myself to be running against all those 70-79 year old people in Madison! I was 38th out of 128 male 5K runners. I even got a medal! Then I bicycled on home.

XXIX. 2015 Crazylegs 8K (4.97 miles) Race, April 25, 2015

It was an overcast morning, a little cool, it being 41 degrees F when I left my home to get on one of the buses taking participants from the Stadium to the Square where the run begins. It was supposed to be rainy but there was no rain. There were about 15,000 runners again. My time this year was 44:27, 21 seconds more than last year. But I was second in my age group (now 75-79). The first place finisher in my age group beat me by 19 seconds. Had I known, I might have speeded up near the end, but I was pretty tired by the time i crossed the 50 Yard line in the UW football stadium. My pace was about 8:51 a mile. Anytime I do an 8K at under a 9 minute a mile pace, I am very pleased (at my age).

XXVIII. 2014 Run For Literacy 5k Race, October 19, 2014

A beautiful cool morning with sun and temperatures in the low 40s. A bit cool waiting for the race to start, but just fine once the race started. Offically, my time was 27:10, just 8 seconds more than last year. It was an 8:45 per mile pace. I was one of two males in the 70-79 age group who did the 5K, the first of two. So I won my age group! I was 71st out of 223 people (male and female) who did the 5K, and 48th out of 92 male runners.

XXVII. 2014 Chrysalis 5K run May 4, 2014: 3rd annual for "Moving for mental health"

This was fun a 5K run to benefit Chrysalis. There were no timing chips but a clock at the beginning and end where one could calculate one's time. The run was partly over a bike path, crossing a couple of streets, over to a pier on Lake Mendota by the Yahara river locks, and then back through Tenney Park. My unofficlal time was 26:42 (there was no official time).

XXVI. 2014 Crazylegs 8k Race, April 26, 2013

It was a great morning for running, a little cool, it being 40 degrees F when I left my home to get on one of the buses taking participants from the Stadium to the Square where the run begins. According to the local paper there were more than 15,000 runners. My time this year was 44:06, 22 seconds more than last year. I was third in my age group (70 to 74), and 3930 overall, 2831 among males. My pace was about 8:47 a mile. Anytime I do an 8K at under a 9 minute a mile pace, I am pleased.

XXV. 2013 Turkey Trot, St. Paul MN, 5k Race, Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2013

It was a cold morning, about 25 degrees Fahrenheit. The hardest part was waiting out in the cold for 45 minutes for the race to start. But it was worth it! I came in first in my age group 70-79. My times was 27:30 more than 4 minutes less than the second person in my age group, and I was the oldest (there were only 4 others in the age group). But I was 364th out of 2467 5K runners.

XXIV. 2013 Run For Literacy 5k Race, October 22, 2013

The first day of autumn, a beautiful day with sun and temperatures in the high 50s. Could not be better. Although I returned from a conference in Montenegro late yesterday afternoon, I was in good form at 10:30 AM. Offically, my time was 27:02, an 8:43 per mile pace. I was the only male in the 70-79 age group who did the 5K. So I clearly won my age group! I was 39th out of 170 people (male and female) who did the 5K.

XXIII. 2013 Crazylegs 8k Race, April 27, 2013

It was a great morning for running. Started out sunny and at race time was about 60 F. During the race it became cloudy. There were about 15,000 runners. My time was 43:44 and I was fourth in my age group (70 to 74). My overall place was 4,064 and my overall gender place was 2951. Last time I did this race was in 2006 when my time was 39:15. So after 7 years my time increased by about 4 1/2 minutes. Not bad, I think.

XXII. 2013 5k Cross-Country Ski Race at Ruby's Inn outside of Bryce Canyon National Park on February18, 2013; 10:00 in the morning!

This was my first ever Cross Country Ski Race. The conditions were not particularly good. Although groomed, there was a lot of ice. Still it was fun, although I fell three times. My time (no chips etc) was 52:57. I could have run faster!

XXI. 2012 MathFest 5k Fun Run in Madison on August 4, 2012; 6:30 in the morning!

Being early it was not too hot yet but it was humid. The run started in front of Monona Terrace and then down along John Nolan Drive (the (bikepath) to Olin Park and back. There was no official timing (it was a fun run!) but I was told I did it in 27 minutes, 30 seconds.

XX. 2011 Turkey Trot in Rhinebeck NY, Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 2011, 5K

An 8:30 AM, 5K run on a brisk morning. It was an unusual start with someone simply saying GO and no pad to start one's chip, the chips all starting at the same time no matter where one was in line. The race course was a little hilly, but I did it in 27:21, an 8:49 per mile pace. I won my age group (70-99) but I was the only one in that age group! The top runner in the 60-69 group ran it in 28:33 (8 runners) so I would have won that age group too. I was 87th out of a total of 282 runners.

XX. 2011 Literacy Network Run (formerly Canterbury Run For Literacy), now combined with a UW Homecoming Run: 5K, Sunday, October 9, 2011

A most gorgeous day in Madison - blue skies, full sun, temperature about 70 F. My time was 26:07, a 8:25 per mile pace. I was overall 68 out of 285 male and female runners, 52 out of 117 male runners, and 3 out of 6 of males in the range 60 and over. I think it is unfair that they don't have a 70 and over category!

XIX. 2010 Literacy Network Run (formerly Canterbury Run For Literacy), 5K, Sunday, October 3, 2010

A beautifully cool and sunny morning - a perfect day for running, but my streak of 8 minutes a mile seems to be over. I did the 5K in 25:19 at a pace of 8:12 a mile. But I finished second in my age group (60 and over) and 37th out of 98 male 5K runners and 49th overall.

XXII. 2010 Madison Race For the Cure, Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 8:30 AM.

An overcast and somewhat muggy morning, but a reasonable day for a run. As last year the age group I fell in was 61 and above. There were only 17 men in that age group; I was the oldest at 70 and came in second: Time of 24:44:32 with a pace of 7:59/mile. Not bad! I was 152nd overall. I can still do a 5K at an 8:00/mile pace.

XVIII. 2009 Literacy Network Run (formerly Canterbury Run For Literacy), 5K, Sunday, October 4, 2009

A very cool and overcast morning. I didn't run this race last year, but two years ago I did it in 24:29. This year I finished in 24:37, a 7:56 pace per mile. I was 41 out of 276 5K runners, and 30/106 5K male runners. My division was 60 and over (bummer) and so finished 3 out 0f 6. It's nice to know that at 70 I can still run a 5K at a less than 8:00 pace per mile.

XXII. 2009 Madison Race For the Cure, Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 8:30 AM.

Finally I was in town to run in one of my favorite races. The weather this year was mixed, cool and overcast with rain having fallen earlier in the morning. Well, the age group I fell in this year was labelled 61 to 97, and I only came in fourth: i(171 overall) 4 Richard Brualdi 1463 24:32.09 7:55/Mile, a total of 9 seconds more than last year, 3 seconds more a mile than last year. Alas, I no longer hold the record for my age group.

2009 Crazylegs 8 K Run: Unfortunately I missed it again as I was out of town.

2008 Crazylegs 8 K Run and 2008 Run for Literacy 5k: Unfortunately I missed them as I was out of town in both cases.

XXI. 2008 Madison Race For the Cure, Saturday, May 31, 2008 at 8:30 AM.

This year the weather started out great and remained great. There were over 10,000 runners and walkers. Much to my surprise I was first in my age (male) group (62 and over) again this year. I even got a mention in ths Sports page of the Wisconsin State Journal on June 1.
My time was 24:23.49, 17 seconds more than last year, a 7:52 pace, but 1 1/2 minutes faster than number 2 in my age group.
Note: From the Race website:
Male 62 and over Record: Richard A. Brualdi - Year: 2007 - Time: 24:06.90

XX. 2007 Literacy Network Run (formerly Canterbury Run For Literacy), 5K, Sunday, October 7, 2007

A warm and muggy October morning. I ran slower than last year and came in only 3rd in my age group: Time: 24:29
Pace: 7:52/mile
49 out of 173 male runners
3 out of 7 runners 60 and over.

2007 Madison Race For the Cure, Saturday, June 2, 2007 at 8:30 AM.

It started out to be a stormy morning, but then about 7:45 AM, the weather cleared. So I got on my bike and cycled for 20-25 minutes to the area around the Alliant Center where the race was to begin. It was a bit muddy there and the race started about 10 minutes late. It took me 16 seconds more than last year but (!!) I won my age group:
Male 62 and over
Place Name Bib No Age all Time Pace
1 Richard A. Brualdi 1322 67 96 24:06.90 7:46/M
After my poor showing in the Meriter's Nurses Run, I managed to run a 5K again at an under 8 minute/mile pace (in fact, 7:46).

2007 Meriter Nurses Run, 5K, Thursday, May 10, 2007 at 6:30 pm.

It was a wonderful evening, sunny, no wind, but a little too warm (low 80s F). There were 421 runners in the 5K race and I came in 58 (compared to 46 last year) with a (slow) time of 25:26 (an 8:12 pace) (compared to 25:21 last year with an 8:10 pace). My winning streak in my age group was broken, as I only finished 2nd in the male 60-69 group. (I was beaten by a 60 year old.) I guess the fact that I am closer to the end of my age group is showing!

XIX. 2006 Canterbury Run For Literacy , 5K, Sunday, October 1, 2006

An absolutely gorgeous Sunday morning for a run - temperature in the 60s, sunny, trees with partial autumn colors - just perfect. Like last year, I was a little under the weather with a mild cold, but I still did well. In fact my time was 23:51 (a 7:41 mile pace), and I won my age group (see below). I was also 39 out of 142 male runners.

XVIII 2006 Madison Race For the Cure, Saturday, June 3, 2006 at 8:30 AM.

It was an absolutely gorgeous morning and I confirmed that at age 66, I can still run a 5K race at a less than 8 minute a mile pace. I came in first in my age group: Men 62 and over:
Place -- Name -- City -- Age -- Overall -- Time -- Pace
1 -- Richard A. Brualdi -- Madison -- 66 -- 124 -- 23:50.2 -- 4:46/K

Apparently I hold the record for this age group from last year:
Record: Richard Brualdi Year: 2005 Time: 23:27.0

2006 Meriter Nurses Run, 5K, Thursday, May 11, 2006 at 6:30 pm.

It could not have been a worse May day for running. Temperature was about 40 degrees F, raining, gusty winds up to 40 miles per hour. I had to wear running pants, and a jacket with a hood - even then I ended up getting soaked. The weather certainly diminished the number of runners who showed up. Before the race we were all huddled in the Vilas Park Shelter with a fire blazing in its outdoor fireplace. I believe most people were slower than usual as a result of the weather; I know I was. But I finished in 25:21:
46 Richard Brualdi 66 Madison, WI 1 25:21 8:10.
This was good enough for first place in my age group (males, 60-69), I was 46th out of a total of 199 (male and female) runners in the 5K and 33 out of a total of 77 male runners in the 5K.

XVI. 2006, the 25rd Annual Crazylegs Classic Run, 8K (4.97 miles), Saturday, April 29, 2006.

It was a very cool morning with 7911 runners (and a lot of walkers). It was so cool so that the State Capital Building was filled with hundreds of runners keeping warm until race time. Nowadays the race is timed using computer chips attached to one's shoes with the results available on the web and published the next morning in the Sunday Wisconsin State Journal.
I was suffering from a cold and chest congestion, BUT my time was 39:15, good enough to to earn THIRD PLACE in my age division (Males, 65-69). I finished in place 1623 out of 7911 runners, so in the top 25%.

XV. 2005 Canterbury Run For Literacy , 5K, Sunday, October 9, 2005

Another fine day for running - about 50 degress and partly sunny. I ran the 5K again this year (a little under the weather from a cold). Much to my surprise I came in first again in my age group with a time of 23:38, just 8 seconds more than last year. The next person in my age group took two minutes longer.

XVI 2005 Meriter Nurses Run, 5K, Thursday, May 12, 2005 at 6:30 pm.

It was a very cold day - about 45 degrees and overcast, actually good weaather to run in; I don't think I even worked up a sweat, This year there were timing transponders for all race participants. I was in the 60-69 age category and I finished second in my age group with a time of 24:17 (a 7:48 minutes/mile pace). I was 41st out of 145 male runners in the 5K race (almost all of whom were younger than I am).

I had to miss this year's CrazyLegs 8K Run on Saturday, April 30, 2005 due to a conference here in Madison in my honor that weekend.

XV. 2004 Canterbury Run For Literacy , 5K, Sunday, October 10, 2004

This year I only did the 5K race on a beautiful cool and sunny Sunday morning. I finished first in my age group:

The next person in my age group took 24:42.

XIV. 2004 Susan K. Komen Race for the Cure, 5 K Run, Saturday June 5, 2004

My age category was 56-65 and I came in 5th in this category (the 5 people who beat me in this age category were 58 or younger. Overall, men and women, I was 76th out of 1259 runners.

XIII. 2004, the 23rd Annual Crazylegs Classic Run, 8K (4.97 miles), Saturday, April 24, 2004.

This race was dedicated to the memory of Elroy Hirsch who died in the last year.
It was a very cool morning with 6965 runners (and a lot of walkers). It was so cool that the State Capital Building was filled with hundreds of runners keeping warm until race time. Nowadays the race is timed using computer chips attached to one's shoes with the results available on the web and published the next morning in the Sunday Wisconsin State Journal.

My time was 36:56, good enough to place 685 (out of 6965 runners) and to earn SECOND PLACE in my age division (Males, 60-64).

XII. 2003 Canterbury Run for Literacy, 10K, Sunday, October 5, 2003.

A truly wonderful morning for running with temperature in the 50's and sunny skies. I won my age group (60 and over) again, finishing 19 seconds less than last year (it seems even at my age, one can improve with age!):

1. 1506 Richard Brualdi 47:30, Pace of 7:39 per mile.

I was 75th out of 195 male runners in the 10K.

XI. 2003 Susan G. Komen Race For the Cure: 5K Run

It was Thursday, May 8, 6:30 pm at Vilas Park in Madison, a nice cool overcast evening.
My official time was 23:10 (3 seconds FASTER than last year), a 4:38 kilometer pace. I won my age group (60 and over) for the fourth straight year, and indeed was 38th out of 184 5K male runners. Next year I am going for a five-peat!

Note: Because I was out of town I had to miss the 2003 CrazyLegs run, now an official 8K race. Next year!

IX. 2002 Canterbury Run for Literacy, 10K, Sunday, September 29, 2002.

A great morning for running with temperature about 65 degrees. I won my age group (60 and over):

1. 1099 Richard Brualdi, 47:49, Pace of 7:42 per mile.

The person second in my age group had a time of 52:09, so I was more than 4 minutes in front. I was 87th out of 188 Males in the 10K run.

VIII. 2002 Meriters Nurses 5K Run

It was Thursday, May 9, 6:30 pm at Vilas Park in Madison.

My official time was 23:13 (19 seconds FASTER than last year), a 4:38 kilometer pace. I won my age group (60 and over) for the third straight year, and indeed was 45th out of 213 5K male runners.

VII. The 21th Crazylegs 5 mile Classic Run was Saturday, April 27, 10 am at the Capital Square in Madison.

It was a cold and rain-threatening day, but the rain held off until at least I finished the race. There were about 9,000 runners.

My time?

BETTER THAN LAST YEAR (see below). I crossed the finished line at 36 minutes, 33 seconds.

My next race is the 5K Meriter Nurses Run on Thursday, May 9, 2002, 6:30 pm beginning at Vilas Park.

VI. 2001 Canterbury Run for Literacy
10 K run on Sunday, September 23, 2001

It was a cool and rainy day - perfect to run in. I won my gender/age group (male/60 and over) and ran faster than I did the last time I ran this race (2 years ago):

1. 2414 Richard Brualdi 46:52 (time), 7:33 (pace)

(This is 1 minutes 25 seconds faster than 2 years ago.) The person who was second in my age group had a time of 52:20. I was 60th out of 142 male runners in the 10K race.

V. 2001 Meriters Nurses 5K Run

It's Thursday, May 20, 6:30 pm at Vilas Park in Madison.

My official time was 23:32, a 4:42 kilometer pace. I seem to have won FIRST PLACE (again!) in my age group (60+); the second place in my age group went to someone who ran the 5K in 24:26. In fact, I was 38th out of 202 male runners, almost all of whom were younger than I am.

IV. 2001 Crazylegs Run

The 20th Crazylegs 5 mile Classic Run is Saturday, April 28, 10 am at the Capital Square in Madison.

Well, I did not do as good as last year but, hey, 36 minutes, 55 seconds isn't bad.

III. 2000 Meriter Nurses 5K Run

It's Thursday, May 11, 6:30 pm (terrible time!) at Warner Park in Madison. It also was warm and very humid. My official time was 22:34:59, a 4:31 per kilometer pace. I won FIRST PLACE in my age group (60+) (the second place in my age group went to someone whose time was 23:55:59). In fact, I was 34th out of 214 male runners!

II. 2000 Crazylegs Run

The Crazylegs 5 mile Classic Run is Saturday, April 29, 2000. Over 10,000 runners (and walkers) are expected, and I will be looking to equal my time of last year but hey I'm a year older! The key to a good time is to start at the front of the pack!

Well there were more than 12,000 runners and it was a cool (about 45 degrees F) and overcast morning - a great running morning. The result is that I (again!) broke my record. I completed the course in 36 minutes 25 seconds, 52 seconds faster than last year.

I. 1999 Canterbury Run for Literacy
10 K run on Sunday, September 19, 1999

Much to my surprise, my time was 48 minutes, 17 seconds, beating my time from last year by 33 seconds. This in spite of the fact that I turned 60 on September 2, 1999.

Here are my Stats:
48 minutes 17 seconds; a 7:47 pace
First place: men, age group 60-64 (second place was 50 minutes, 20 seconds)
67th out of 145 finishers (so I finished ahead of 77 people younger than I am).
