Math 141, Sem. I, 1998-99 (R.A. Brualdi) Handout 8 (October 2, 1998) Topic: Some Review Type Problems Problems to do over the weekend. Come to class on Monday having worked on them. 1. You are considering job offers from Germany and Holland. In Germany you are offered 30 DMs (Deutschmarks) per hour for a 40 hour week. In Holland you are offered 35 Gl (Guilders) per hour, work week unspecified. The current exchange rates are: 1 DM = .59 US$, 1 Gl = .53 US$. (a) How many hours a week must you work in Holland to make your weekly pay there equal to your weekly pay in Germany? (b) Suppose that in Holland you also work a 40 hour work week. Suppose also the jobs are open only for one year (52 weeks). Finally, suppose that the income taxation in Germany is computed as: 5000 DM plus 30% of the annual income above 25,000 DM, and that income taxation is computed in Holland as: 6000 Gl plus 25% of the annual income above 24,000 Gl. In which country is your after-tax income greater? By how much (in US$)? 2. Robin lives in Madison and has a spouse who lives in Chicago. They decide to meet in Milwaukee. Milwaukee is 80 miles from Madison and 90 miles from Chicago. The spouse leaves Chicago one day at 8:00 AM and drives at 65 mph; you leave Madison the same day at 8:12 AM. (a) How fast must Robin drive (correct to two decimal places) to arrive in Milwaukee at the same time as the spouse? (b) What time do they meet up in Milwaukee? (c) On the way back to Madison, Robin drives at 50 mph. What was Robin's average speed for the round trip?
