Math 141, Sem. I, 1998-99 (R.A. Brualdi)
Handout 14 (October 23, 1998)
Topic: Project paper
The purpose of this handout is to remind you that you have a project
paper due on Friday, December 11. As stated in the syllabus, the paper
is to be a 3-4 page typed paper on the use or misuse of Quantitative
Reasoning (QR) in a discipline of your choice. It should include
references (books, magazines, newspapers, ...) and actual quantitative
reasoning - just having numbers doesn't count. The paper is worth 30
points (so 1 1/2 quizzes).
Some possibilities are:
1. Explain in your own words how QR has been used in one of your
courses, relating it, if possible, to what we have talked about in
class this semester. Show actual reasoning.
2. Use the Undergraduate Library or the WEB, searching on quantitative
reasoning, and see what you come up with. Report on what you find but
be sure that you describe actual QR.
3. Report on several instances of QR that occur in newspaper articles
etc., again showing actual QR.
4. Maybe you have some other ideas.
I would be happy to look at short drafts (at most a page) for topic and
content before the Thanksgiving break.
