Logic Seminar M975 %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Wed Sept 7,9,12,14 David Milovich "Families of open sets which are omega-like with respect to containment" see http://www.math.wisc.edu/~milovich/omegaop.pdf Fri Sept 16,19,21,?23? Christopher Alfeld "Non-Branching Degrees in the Medvedev Lattice of Pi01 Classes" see http://www.math.wisc.edu/~alfeld/nonbranching.pdf %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% coming attractions: Erik Andrejko will present: Justin Moore "A Five Element Basis for the Uncountable Linear Orders." see http://front.math.ucdavis.edu/math.LO/0501525 Dilip Raghavan will present: Uri Abraham "Proper forcing." to appear in: Handbook of Set Theory. Foreman, Kanamori, and Magidor (eds.) see: http://www.cs.bgu.ac.il/~abraham/papers/math/Proper.dvi Jaime Posada will present some results on the Banach-Tarski paradox. see Dougherty, Randall; Foreman, Matthew Banach-Tarski paradox using pieces with the property of Baire. Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 89 (1992), no. 22, 10726-8. Derek Moffitt will present a paper of Kunen about Ramsey's Theorem and finite fields. I am not sure which one. From Asher Kach: (In response to my proding) "Hopefully I'll solve the problem I've been working on in the near future... There is some evidence to suggest that the solution isn't that far away (hopefully!). If I do, then I'd be happy to present its solution." Asher is not registered in 975 - thanks for coming anyway Asher! and Hopefully you will continue to do so. David Fremlin will be speaking (Fri Oct 28 and maybe more) about the Control Measure Problem. There has been some major progress on the general theory of Maharam algebras but no suggestion that it will lead to a decision about CMP. He will also be speaking in the logic colloquium on Oct 27. see http://www.essex.ac.uk/maths/staff/fremlin/n05622.ps I will fill-in between student talks by nattering on about Q-sets. These are uncountable separable metric spaces with the property that every subset is the countable union of closed sets (i.e., F_sigma). See: www.math.wisc.edu/~miller/res/madq.pdf for my latest caterwauling on this subject. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Other students enrolled in the class: James Hunter will not be attending or giving a talk as he has another class in the Engineering building which overlaps in time. Jon Godshall will be attending only Mon and Fri as he is supposed to be sitting in the calculus lecture he is TA for. He tells me that he needs the class to fulfill a minor requirement in logic but is planning to go into the field of Lie-Algebras. The following are also registered but I don't know if any are willing to speak: Kiernan,Kathleen Postlewaite McGinn,Daniel Patrick Supanich,Jodi Ann Tsai,Eugene Yang One might think just because Dan and Eugene don't come to class that they don't plan to give a talk. However, Dilip doesn't come either and he seems to be planning to speak. So, one can never tell.
