Overview
Math 234 is the last course in the standard Calculus series at UW, consisting of Math 221-222-234. The series is designed for students with majors in the Physical Sciences or Engineering. Honors student interested in a theoretical approach should consider our sequence 275-276-375-376 instead of 221-222-234. Full credit is not allowed for both 234 and 223.
Some majors in the school of business require Math 211-213 instead of Math 221-222-234. Math 213 has some content overlap with Math 234 and full credit cannot be received for both Math 234 and Math 213. Besides the regular lectures, students are required to attend the smaller discussion sections (once a week) where TAs will help with the practical aspects of the subject and will answer any question about the lecture and the assignment. Discussion sections will be hands-on classes.
All students should be engaged in the course, this includes going to the lectures and discussion sessions, doing assignments and readings and thinking about what is done in class.
Final Exam
There will be no final exam.
Midterm Exams
The midterm exams will be in class on the following dates:
Midterm 1: Friday, October 15
Midterm 2: Friday, November 19
Midterm 3: Wednesday, December 15
HomeworkHomework will be assigned throughout the week, and will be due in your TA sessions the following week.
Scroll down to find the assignments.
Late homeworks are not accepted.
QuizzesYour TA will administer a short quiz every other week (I'll mark the weeks with quizzes on the homework schedule).GradingYour final grade is based on Homework & Quizzes (20%) and three Midterm Exams: Midterm 1 (25%), Midterm 2 (25%), and Midterm 3 (30%).
Calculator policyThe use of a calculator will not be permitted on the quizzes or midterms, nor will you need one.
Use of telephones is similarly forbidden.
Communicating with me
The best way to communicate with me is to come to my office hours. If you cannot make it to these, try your TA's office hours. If you would rather talk to me, please let me know after the lecture and I will try to set an appointment.
Important: There are nearly 250 students in this class. This makes it impossible for me to read and reply to queries by email. So, please, do not contact me via email unless absolutely necessary.
Other resourcesThe math department has a drop-in tutorial service, the Math lab. It runs afternoon/evening, Monday through Thursday. It will help with small questions in your homework, etc, but it will not tutor entensively. The Math Tutorial service does more extensive tutoring, but you need to commit several hours a week. If you do not attend, they will stop your tutoring. You need a referral from your TA to enter the Tutorial service. Finally, if you feel you are in real trouble in the class, you can ask your TA to refer you to the Early Alert System during the third week of classes. The system will have an adviser review your background and issue recommendations on what else you can do to improve your situation. All services are free of charge.
AssignmentsThe schedule of assignments may be updated frequently, and is not final until Friday afternoons. But, after 5pm each Friday, the assignment will not change.
