Information for visitors to the UChicago math department

(Especially speakers in the number theory seminar)

Accomodations

Typically we book a hotel for number theory seminar speakers. If you are scheduled to speak in the next two weeks, and I have not sent you your hotel confirmation, email me ASAP!

Getting to UChicago

By air:

You can fly into Midway (MDW) or O'Hare (ORD; the abbreviation is based on the former name, Orchard Field). Midway is closer but O'Hare is bigger.

To Hyde Park from Midway: I recommend Lyft, Uber, or Taxi.

To Hyde Park from O'Hare during the day: I suggest taking public transit (CTA Blue Line) to one of the stops in the Loop (Washington, Monroe, Jackson, or LaSalle), then take Lyft/Uber/taxi to Hyde Park. Plan for about 90 minutes.

To Hyde Park from O'Hare at night: Go by car. After dinnertime this is the fastest way to go. During the day this is an option as well, but the route goes through the center of Chicago, and you can expect it to take up to two hours.

If you prefer public transit: This will take 90 minutes to 2 hours. You'll take CTA Blue Line, to CTA Red Line, to the 55 bus, to campus.

Between Hyde Park and Northwestern: Take Lyft/Uber/taxi. Budget an hour, and leave extra time on top of that.

Public transit, detailed directions

To get on CTA Blue Line at O'Hare: Follow the signs. It's really easy. You should pass through a long underground walkway that connects the three terminals and the Blue Line. (If you see a lot of flags hanging over a moving walkway, you're in the right place.) In the middle of the walkway you'll see a row of ticket machines. (They make a discinctive chiming noise.) After you buy your ticket, the Blue Line entrance is across from the ticket machines. O'Hare is the end of the Blue Line, so all the trains here are going the direction you want to go.

To transfer from Blue Line to Lyft/Uber: Get off the train at Washington, Monroe, Jackson, or LaSalle, and exit the station. When you reach the street, check a street sign and order a Lyft/Uber. (This requires a smartphone with Lyft or Uber. I don't know if it's possible to hail a taxi on the street.)

To take Red Line and the 55 bus: When you transfer from Blue Line to Red Line, you'll want to get a Red Line train southbound (to 94th / Dan Ryan). Ride the Red Line train to Garfield. (Numerically, Garfield is another name for 55th Street.) The train runs along a highway. When you get off, you'll end up on an overpass. You're on 55th Street (aka Garfield) where it crosses the highway. Cross 55th Street (to the south side of the street) and wait for the bus. Take the bus east through a park and to campus.

Weather

Attacks of pleasant weather have been known to strike Chicago in the months of April and October; plan accordingly.
